Pigs’ book club read The Color of Water, a book about a black man who learns as an adult that his mother was a white, Jewish woman.* At her book club meeting everyone brought an item of Jewish food. There were bagels, latkes, cheesecake, and Pigs brought hummus. If I were to bring Christian food to a book club meeting I’d probably bring ham and hot cross buns. Maybe a communion wafer, if I could get my hands on one.
Anyway, check out the comments in the post. Guess which one annoyed me.
*My mother gave me that book a few years before it was the 2004 selection of the One Book One Philadelphia book discussion, saying, “It’s just like us, only you’re not black!”

I was in Dallas not to long ago and I saw no signs for Jew-Town. I would have like to seen it. I am always up for some jewy fun!

The above is my guess. although it may have not been intended to sound the way it did; if it was my heritage (100% greek) clustered in that way — it would annoy me.

Wait wait wait. Are we ignoring the comment about the tough Jewish negotiator and its use of “Jew” as a verb?
Also, I *love* that people feel the need to point out where you can find Jews (There are Jews in Dallas! and outside of St. Louis!), because we are so exotic. Though I think that’s my citified East Coast/Midwestern Big City bias talking: In most of America, there really are no Jews. Crazy.

I had to read “The Color of Water” this semester for my Race and Cultural Relations class, and I loved it. I wasn’t even supposed to start it until after April 10th, and I killed it months ago. I loved it!!!
