It's an interesting view for sure and I appreciate it so this is a little something for all...
To succeed in politics, it is often necessary to rise above your principles. :)

I've got three little boys...nearly 7, just turned 4, and 16 months. I always laugh at everyone who uses the prase "terrible twos" because I know that age three is the real battlefield. Three-year olds are assholes. Developmentally, they are just built to test their power and independence at three. They do well in school and come home to test, test, test (also known as terrorize).

Just wanted to pipe in with my support, though you've never before heard of me. And also share this hilarious quote I recently heard on a video shown in my Early Childhood class: "Three-year-olds will test you, push you, and violate your civil rights." Our whole classroom full of parents laughed at that one-off for about 2 minutes.

He sounds like my 3 yo. She never. ever. stops talking. Ever. Even if she is babbling nonsense. She would happily eat nothing but eggs and ice-cream (but not the egg yolks) and she would stay up every night and sleep on the couch.

Unfortunately, she is 3 and I make the rules, meaning that eggs and ice-cream happen, but not all day and sleeping on the couch is only allowed if it's a midday nap and I am too freaking grateful that she's napping to move her. (She stopped napping at 20 months. Worst thing ever.)

I think it is textbook behavior to act the worst with the people you love and trust the most - especially when you're 3. You know what you're doing, but that doesn't always make it easy in the moment. Parenting well is effing hard. You are requiring him to develop more evolved coping skills. Unfortunately right now everyone else is experiencing the benefit of all of your work.

Mine is going to be three in a little over a month, and I'm already seeing the glimmer of asshole deluxe on the horizon. He's great at school, but also acts out at home, because like you said, he reserves it for us. He knows that we still love him. It's annoying and exhausting, but I guess it's nice knowing they trust you enough to let you see their bad side?

And on top of that, I have an asshole baby who lately has taken to SCREAMING in her crib when we put her to bed. I'm so fucking over it.
